Miami Dade College Presents

The Birth of Coffee Exhibition

sponsored by Gavina Gourmet Coffee

Miami, January 14, 2011 - The renowned Art Gallery System at Miami Dade College (MDC) will present a documentary photographic exhibition about one of the world's most popular beverages when the Birth of Coffee exhibition opens Feb. 3. The exhibition will be located at the Wolfson Campus' Centre Gallery and will run through April 9.

Photographer Daniel Lorenzetti and writer Linda Rice Lorenzetti traveled more than a quarter of a million miles to record the diverse communities of people who grow coffee. Their travels trace coffee's historic 18th century globalization, from its humble origin in Ethiopia to its experimental planting by opportunists, missionaries and settlers. In the tradition of important documentary teams of the past, the Lorenzetti's find commonality across the diversity of the world's coffee growing cultures, documenting the faces and lives of the people who nurture coffee from seed to cup.

As the Lorenzetti's state, "Our work is a synergy of two familiar and creative endeavors, the visual art of photography and the written word. We purposefully combine the virtues of both to create what we call a 'visual artifact', seeking to educate and enlighten by allowing our audience to appreciate the lives and worlds of the people and places we encounter." They add, "In meeting the people who grow coffee, we often had the feeling we were touching the heart and soul of the countries we were documenting. And long before the end of our project, we developed an appreciation for the beverage that far exceeds the taste of a fine cup of coffee. In our opinion, coffee lovers the world over owe them an enormous debt of gratitude."

Harvested in more than fifty countries, coffee is the world's second largest commodity. Yet despite its widespread popularity, the coffee enjoyed by most people today was planted on a small, single-family farm, where coffee is not as much a drink as a way of life. This exhibition is sponsored by Gavina Gourmet Coffee. The Centre Gallery is open Tuesday Friday from noon to 5 p.m.
